Thanks for posting. I have a Fort Knox and two of the pistol safes and would recommend them to anyone.

Aww man. Now I can't lie to myself and say that a 400 dollar safe will be just fine.

Ehh...I'm not entirely convinced. Most criminals aren't the A+ students of the world. If I have a safe that has 1/8" vs. 1/4" most criminals might see it and say "we ain't getting into that..." Sure if you get the determined expert crackers then yeah, better have more protection. I'm just not sure how many criminals are expert safe crackers. Long story short: Better a safe than no, even if it is just $400.

Like he said every safe has it's purpose, are you protecting against little hands, smash and grabs or do you have a $100k gold coin collection that needs to be highly guarded from the pros.

Thanks for posting. I've been looking around for safes the past few weeks, and this cleared up a few of the questions I had.

Absoloutly. He has a lot of good info, just I wouldn't dissuade anyone from buying at least a safe just because they don't have a solid foot of steel around and a heat seeking turret on the top. :P

Just takes 2 guys with pry bars, they will have it open in 5 minutes unless you have VERY close fitted door and fram and SOLD STEEL for the front of the door. 1/4 and up.

I have gotta agree with some of the other posts here: It all comes down to the question of what you are trying to do with your safe. If you have some extreme valuables then you would want an extreme safe. If you are trying to provide a deterrent, of simply trying to keep the kids fingers from your firearms, then you would be looking for somethng slightly different.

I will agree that even a generic safe is better than no safe at all. And ultimately, locks and safes are really to ward off 'honest thieves' - there is always SOMEONE who could get into just about anything. And, looking at it differently - can you really justify spending big bucks on a safe, while still having so many other deficiencies in the home (inexpensive doorlocks, cheaper doors, etc...)

Very nice find. Who knew a 27 minute presentation on safes could be so interesting?
