Why'd he veto the Ontario Co. hunting bill? At least there is a new version in the works.

    http://www.fltimes.com/articles/2009...b607946342.txt

State officials misfired on a proposed Ontario County law that would
have let hunters use rifles to take deer and bear south of Routes
    5&20 in Ontario County.

Bristol Supervisor Wayne Houseman told the Board of Supervisors
Thursday night that state lawmakers approved the law, but their
version inadvertently made it permissible to use rifles to hunt deer
and bear throughout the county, not just south of Routes 5&20 as
    local legislators had intended.

So now the county will have to start over and approve the local
    version once again.

By the time the mistake was discovered, both the state Senate and
Assembly had passed the erroneous bill and Gov. David Paterson was
about to sign it until Houseman told Paterson's office that an error
was made and advised the governor to veto the law.

If that didn't happen, hunters could use rifles to hunt deer and bear
    throughout the county.

"Certainly, that wasn't our intent," Houseman said.

As it was explained it to him, Houseman said the state had 45 days to
amend the law back to the original version passed by local
supervisors, but somehow failed to do so and the correction wasn't made.

"I truly don't know how the error could have occurred," Houseman
    said, shrugging his shoulders.

Farmington Supervisor Ted Fafinski, who also serves as board
chairman, thanked Houseman "for championing the cause" and urged the
county to start the approval process all over again.

In 2008, a group of hunters approached Houseman about hunting deer
and bear with rifles, so he sought the opinion of rod and gun clubs
in the county and found they supported the idea. The resolution
passed, 14-6, last January, with supporters saying it might be safer
and more humane because rifle bullets disintegrate on the slightest
impact. Opponents worried that it would cause more accidental
    shootings, especially with inexperienced hunters.

Many counties in the state already permit rifle hunting, with Yates
and Steuben approving similar legislation in recent years.
