Yeah, I think we do. How is it that "...shall not be infringed" is weaker than "Congress shall pass no law..."?

My brother-in-law at dinner last night had this argument: "Well the founding fathers who wrote that did not foresee you gun nuts running around with high capacity magazine fully automatic rifles shooting up innocent people going to church or the movies! They had single shot inaccurate muskets to defend themselves from an overbearing tyrannical government! I think the founding fathers would approve Congress passing a law to protect us from lunatics with these kinds of guns."

There were so many things wrong and ignorant with this comment that I let it go. It wasnt my dinner table and it had become a personal argument where he couldnt hear counterarguments to his ignorance. I didnt take it any further. This is the kind of guy that will run to the powers that be and rat me out for having guns when they come and take them from everyone so he can get brownie points or gas coupons or whatever they're handing out and he'll believe he's doing the right thing.

All this crap that I hear in regards to what the Founding Fathers had in mind makes me sick. At the time of the writing of the Constitution, Single fired guns were about the only thing that people had. When the 2nd Amendment was written, everyone had the same and equal weapons; the people and the Military's of the land. There should never be restrictions on what people can own. The FF were not stupid, they knew that technology would change and be upgraded in time, even knowing this, they did not add clauses for the future. This argument with me holds no water. The anti's need to come up with better points to take away our rights!

I did some personal soul searching on guns. My conclusion: I need more guns and ammo.

My soul searching resulted in a desire to have less restrictions on my ability to defend myself, my family and my property.

I would have taken him outside...........

    to talk...

I'm going to assume he doesn't know much about guns, or how to use them.

The subject to this thread seems to misquote the president. Folks might have doubts about his sincerity of respecting the 2nd A, but we should be careful not to put words in his mouth.

Seriously, veterans aren't all exempt from this kind of thinking either, not even 11B infantry and the like.

Also, my soul searching has revealed to me that it's time to get out of Dodge. I mean, this state.

simply being in the military doesnt make you pro gun, or have common sense either. So i dont see how its a factor? its a common misconception. kind of like "oh well Steve/Josh/Dan is in the military...yes...but that doesnt make them automatically a good shot, or a guru on guns... biggest mistake i made was taking a guy i worked with who was a "Petroleum specialist" in the Army....aka a guy that drives a gas truck. He didnt know how to adjust a typical M4 buttstock, and had a negligent discharge with the 92FS pistol i let him shoot. you think he would know? I know many who put in 4 years and never left a US base just pushing paperwork at a desk. Even during "training exercises".

I take back what I said before. I think that phrase should be changed to "Get TO Dodge." Dodge City is a pretty nice place to live nowadays if you're a gun owner...

What pisses me off is the reference always to these people who served in the Military. What the hell does that have to do with the shootings? He could have worked at Burger King. Has no bearing at all with being a freak of society and a misfit! Many hundreds of thousands have served with no adverse actions.

Fro Vietnam and forward, suddenly vets are the scary sociopaths who need containment and controlling, usually listed in the form of 'danger to himself and others, menace to society'

Post WWII and Korea people were proud to associate with vets and even went out of thier way to do so, and millions of them moved amongst us.

Well people eat up stupid stuff. It's like that like in Full Metal Jacket where Gunny is talking about...Lee Harvey Oswald? Basically he says "LHO fired 3 shots at Kennedy from XXX meters in X.XX seconds and killed him. And do you know where he learned to do that? IN THE MARINE CORPS!" I honestly think people are stupid enough to believe that: Armed services? Oh, he was trained to be a killer (of all people, guilty or innocent.)

I think he was referring to the marksmanship being learned in the Marines, not the will to kill innocents. One of the reasons the WW2 vets were treated differently is because it was a war that the vast majority of the public supported. The good war so to speak.

Here is the quote in it's entirety...

"All of us recognize that these kinds of terrible, tragic events are happening with too much regularity for us not to do some soul searching to examine additional ways that we can reduce violence," Obama said at an Oval Office ceremony to sign an unrelated bill.

It paints a slightly different picture than the OP is trying to paint with it.

He's desperately trying to calm his anti-gun voter base, the Reids and Bloombergs of the world, while not outright saying anything that could be viewed as anti-gun by the pro-2A group and the biggest lobby group in the country.

I have to give him credit for doing a great job. As he said it, its not outwardly in favor of gun control, but if you are looking for the president to be saying something anti-gun, you could hear it there if you wanted.

I know, that is what I am saying. And then people get the idea, "Well yeah, they are taught to kill so that means they were taught to kill either guilty or innocent."

I wasn't really painting any pic...I found his choice of words to be interesting...like maybe gun owners should look way down deep and come to some conclusion that we should voluntraily give up our weapons so everyone would be safe....
