whats every ones thoughts on the ruger p89. i have a chance to pick one up used at the local shop for 315 with a preban 15rd magazine. it seems to be in good condition, though i havent field stripped it. for anyone interested it is at buffalo gun center on hold for me, but they did say i could switch the downpayment to a different pistol if i wanted to. all the reviews i read make it seem like a decent purchase. edit: should be noted this will be for target, hunting, and hd. The only think I'm not in favor of is the slide mounted safety/decocker. It does look like a decent gun, at 36 ounces recoil shouldn't be to bad.

I have the P95 version of the Ruger autoloader, the polymer framed one, in 9MM. It will digest any ammo you throw at it, is surprisingly accurate with the right ammo, it is a fun and pleasant gun to shoot. I can't find anything bad to say about them really, the decocker only bothered me the very first time I used it as I had never had a gun that dropped the hammer like that. Can't see where you could go wrong with the P89.

Budsgunshop.com has the Ruger P95 brand new for $300 delivered plus FFL transfer ($15 at my FFL.) It's plastic framed instead of metal, though - I know that's a big factor for some folks. Interestingly, they also have a well-used P89 for $319 delivered (plus transfer.) Ruger P89 Review – Jeff Adamson It was in production for 17 years, discontinued in 2008. Looks like it was well regarded by all who had them (for a larger, heavier gun.) Scott in Penfield

A good gun overall. I picked one up earlier this year for $310 at the local Gander Mountain. It shoots very well overall and hasn't jammed, even with the crappy remanufactured ammo that Dick's sells. Stripping is a bit tricky though; the takedown lever takes some getting used to. It is also possible to get the spring in backwards which causes some interesting issues. The SA/DA trigger takes some getting used to as well. Without the hammer cocked, the first pull is really heavy, although still crisp and predictable. The subsequent pulls are light by comparison. The gun seems wider at the back of the slide than my XD40, which makes it a bit tougher to conceal. With just a t-shirt it always seems to print. As a result, I don't carry it that much. I think it makes a decent target gun, or a carry gun during the winter.
