Default WANTED: What 22LR Target pistol do I buy??

I am looking to buy a nice entry level target pistol that can hold a red dot scope under $250. Love the thought of a Plinker I can shoot all weekend for under $20!!

Looking to buy new or will be open to used if anyone has a fun little target shooter.

Was looking at Ruger Charger, Beretta U22 Neos, and the Walther SP22

    Any ideas??

Def wanna keep it under $250

Any Ruger 22 auto mk 1, 2 or 3. can be had under your budget and you can put a scope mount on them.

I agree with the Ruger Mk II or III. Might be hard to find a Buckmark for under $250 but if you can, you'll have a nice target gun.

Well, you can put the Ruger Charger out of your options list. It's not available in NY since it the weight exceeds the legal pistol weight limit. I've also heard another reason is something about the magazine not being in the grip, but I'm not positive about that one. Point is, not legal here regardless.

I personally like the Neos a lot at it's very low price point, especially if you want to keep it under $250. The triggers can be made quite excellent with very little work or additional cost ( I literally wrote the book on it.. heh ). The grip angle looks weird, but actually seems to feel pretty good to people with large and small hands alike.

Don't know how good of one you'll get for 250,All the used ones I've see were well over 300(by at least 25).
I bit the bullet and sprung for a new Single Six convertable at 460+.
We gotta get outta this place,if it's the last thing we ever do.

My ruger MKIII came with the rail, I think they all do now.
Any effort to rationalize the use of this revolver in a serious combative scenario is evidence of intellectual bankruptcy.

I like the Mark III 22/45 with an UltraDot MatchDot on it. I think that it can still outshoot me. It is the 5.5" version with the replacable panels. So I replaced them with an Accugrip that placed my finger in the correct position.

You can buy a mount for any Ruger Mark series pistol. The Mark is probably the most popular bullseye rimfire pistol for 50 years. Even with cheap ammo it will outshoot most and it's well balanced. Not quite a Hammerli, but some of us could out shoot some of our Hammerli laden brethern on a regular basis. That's satisfying!

I might be the odd ball but don't forget the S&W 22a. I picked one up at gander mountain when they were on sale, cost of the pistol and cheap red dot was $250.

The charger is out as stated . because the mag is outside the pistol grip it falls under the AWB laws. Because of this it's weight makes it a no go.

this is the one a got 5.5 bull barrel. I haven't had a chance to shoot it much but it is very acurate. and the rail is built in.

I had a Ruger Mark a long time ago and hated it because it was a pain to clean. Are they still difficult to field strip? Maybe it was just me.....

If you're trying to keep it under $200 get a Ruger Mark I or Mark II used, as numerous people have said. That will smoke any of the 3 guns you mentioned. I literally lost count of the number of cottontail rabits I killed with mine when I was a kid. [N.B. growing up in NYS must really suck if you happen to like handguns.]

High Standard makes(or at least used to, I'm not familiar with recent offerings) a very good pistol.

I have a Neos on hold at a local dealer. Awaiting my permit. I really like the feel and the rail already on it.

I will have to look you up hexidismal when Get my hands on it regarding the trigger.

next I would really like a 9mm. But I like the neos and seems well balanced and was natural when I held it.

They're a pain to field strip, but normally you don't need to strip it to get it clean.

Last time I saw one, double his price range for a High Standard.

I'm in the process (gotta love NY) of buying a Ruger Mark II with a trigger job, millet rings and red dot for $350. I kind of figured if I tried to build it, it would be ~4-500 new.

We have the SP22, great little gun.

Hey Hexidismal, do you mind sharing your Neos insight? We just picked one up as a second plinker and I wouldn't mind improving the trigger somewhat. (sorry for the hijack!)

Ruger MkII here with a red dot and I LOVE the accuracy at the range. The weight is great and the custom grips on it really solidify my grip on it. Got it used for a bit over $250 but in now way am I disappointed.
Looked at the Neos but not for under $250

stover954rr, check out Beretta Neos 'homebrew' trigger Guide - hexidismal

I've had that NEOS trigger job guide up for years. The only little issue might be that the guide was done years before the recall. I'm not sure if the post recall parts change anything.
