    Default Storage in vehicle

    Hey all,

Question on storing your carry gun when you cant bring it into work, or where ever. How do you secure it in your vehicle, or do you elect not to carry it at all in these cases?

Is there any method of securing the weapon in the vehicle that you are comfortable with, short of installing a small safe? One friend recommended a cable lock to the post of the seat, under the seat. Sounds reasonable, but looking for opinions/info.

Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

Cable lock is how I store it in my Jeep to and from the range. Through the case, around the tie down points on the floor. Covered with stuff. My glove box isn't a locking type, so that's probably what I will do when I have a full carry permit as well.

Yeah the truck I drive doesn't have a locking glove box, so I'm not sure what to do with my pistol when I have to go in somewhere that doesn't allow it.

What kind of vehicle do you have? I think the best option is a small safe or lock box bolted to the floor. Although I would feel semi-safe with it cable locked to a secure spot and out of sight. Josh

Jam it up under your dash, deep inside with the wires until you have something more secure.

I had a guy I worked with. He was CCW and had a small safe welded in his extended cab pick up truck. He would store his firearms there while he worked.
Long story short, some other guys at work did not like him, ran there mouth, made accusations of him threatening them (never happened). Some Security guy from our office in NYC came up, asked to see his truck. He showed him his CCW permit, his truck, and said " I am following the law",,,,,,,then they fired him for having a weapon on company property. No court, no law, no peace officer.
Leave it secured in your car all you want, just be careful where you park your car.

I've seen little metal lockboxes at various places that are intended for this. Most of them come with a cable lock and are flat enough that you can hide them under the seat. The one that I'm going to buy when I get my carry permit is big enough for full sized pistol (5" 1911 or Glock) with an extra magazine and has the added benefit of being TSA approved. Theoretically you can also use it within your checked baggage if you want to fly with a firearm. Saves you the expense of buying something just for that.

I'll post a link later when I get home.

Edit: Here's one. I like this concept because it's fairly painless to remove it from your car if you needed to secure your firearm somewhere else (hotel room?) away from home.

He might also have said "no" when they asked for permission to search his vehicle.....

I have a Chevy G2500 service van and I bought a quick access gun safe from American Sportsman, back when they were on Culver Rd. I have had it for 14 or 15 years now, it's one of those 5 push button jobs, it works great. I have it through bolted to the floor of the Van between the seats. It's big enough to hold my S&W 629 (44mag, which I carry during deer season~~~hey, ya never know) and my wallet.

I have a personal rule of "no carry in a customers home" so when I get to a customers home I just throw *IT* (which ever gun I decide to carry that day) in the safe.

But I carry everywhere else. especially if I have to go to the warehouse downtown. There are some scary people downtown.....besides me ;D

Manufactures don't have a ammo shortage
They have a serious surplus of customers

I bought six of these. (Large) All keyed alike.

I have a pair in each vehicle since my wife and I both carry. I got a few extra cables at the same time for only $3 each.

I have another two that are good for anything you want to keep safe in a hotel etc. while traveling.

I didn't want the combo version because they only use three digit combinations.

All I can say is WOW. Here in Nassau County we are not allowed to leave the firearm in a car for even a second. We have the to and from range thing which means that we can not even carry into a 7-11 but you can not ever leave it in a car.

They were all friends years ago, went shooting together for years and then fell apart. As for searching his vehicle, he was just being honest and helpful,,,,,look where it got him.
No one at work was aware of the "No Weapons" rule and he thought since it was his vehicle that he was ok. Whether or not it was parked on company property.
Just think outside the box when you do something.

Someone is going to sit in your car long enough to go through up to 999 different codes? Wouldn't they just bring a pair of cable cutters or steal the whole car if they wanted it that badly?

I'm more concerned with IF THEY DID cut the cable.

Using two hands you can probably go through 999 codes in less than 17 minutes. Not many people would set the code to 999, so it could actually take far less time. I've tried it.

One other thing that worries me about the combo version. I used to fly a lot. On two occasions someone I was flying with had to pry open their combo briefcase in the airport to get to their airline tickets. So I don't have a lot of trust in them.

If someone were to get the box out of my vehicle, I want them to have to use brute force to get it open. Certainly easy enough with the right tools but it may take quite a bit longer.

With six boxes keyed the same I got 12 keys. I have the same key on five key rings with 7 spares.

I've got one of the combo style boxes and it works great. These boxes are not made to be bullet proof. If someone wants in, they eventually will.
My reason for one is so that if I need to leave my gun in my car it is locked up, it is not a long term safe. A thief in public will generally not have the time or patience to mess with the lock and cable if they even locate the safe. Most guys are just grabbing the quick stuff.

A lot of Jeep folks use Tuffy Products for securing valuables. Their web site is here: http://www.tuffyproducts.com/. You can search their products by vehicle make, year, and model to make things easier to find. Their stuff is really good quality and the range of products is big.

I guess that's the way I was looking at it too. None of these boxes is going to stop someone really determined. It should be enough to stop the punk who is breaking windows in the parking lot looking for loose change/credit cards/etc though. He doesn't have the time to sit in your car trying every possible combination and it's unlikely that he has cable cutters with him.

If they did bring cable cutters then does it really matter how good your safe is? They are going to have all the time in the world to get into it.

    Actually it's 729 different codes
