They had LMT MP tested bolt carrier groups in stock earlier today for $130 too. Sold out already though. That's the first i've seen good BCGs in stock anywhere in months.

So why would we want to buy one?

I've been thinking about building one instead of buying a preban mainly due to inflated price. I can have 2 of the forbidden items but no more correct?

AR-15 = One forbidden item right off the bat: removable magazine.

So, aside from the mag, you may have 1 other "evil" feature: pistol grip, collapsible stock, threaded barrel/flash-hider, bayonet lug.
Obviously, collapsible stock in NY is pretty much impossible on a non-pre-ban gun. Usually, pistol grip and magazine is it.

Hmmm.....so how much does it really cost to build a ban compliant model? Are ar15, m15, m4 mags are all the same?

The removable mag isn't one if the items on the list of things you can only have one of. The list applies to all semi-auto rifles with a detachable magazine. On an AR-15 the pistol grip is the one thing on the list that you'll have so you can't have another one.

Building a ban compliant AR-15 isn't much more expensive than a non compliant one. You have to pay to have a muzzle brake welded on and possibly grind off a bayonet lug. Everything else is the same.

edit. AR, M16, M4 mags... all the same thing.

Right, but if the mag was fixed, it wouldn't matter because it wouldn't count as an "assault weapon" regardless of what else you had. You could, theoretically, weld the mag in place and then have a collapsible stock, pistol grip, bayonet, and flash-hider all on the same gun. (If I remember correctly, I read a thread on ARFCOM where someone did this. You reload by releasing the rear takedown pin, flipping the upper forward, and sticking rounds in the top of the mag.)

Boy that seems like a lot of trouble. I'd rather deal with having a detachable magazine.

What it really comes down to is do you REALLY need a flash hider, bayonet lug, etc...? I don't. A collapsible stock is the only item on the list that I find remotely useful but can get over not having.

Sometimes it's a case of WANT and not need. Too often as firearms owners we get conned into thinking about what we really need instead of what we want, as one of the more common gun-grabber lines is, "why would you ever need one of those?"

I should be able to have whatever I WANT as long as it does not infringe on the explicit rights of others, just as Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama WANT their private jets and vineyard properties and large mansions.

When we start shrugging off laws like the AWB by saying "I don't really need that anyway," it just makes it that much easier for the next round of restrictions to be put in place. At some point we will be down to a tube with a hammer and one cartridge allowed. I guess that is all I really NEED to shoot, but damn I would really WANT a few more things on my gun.

    Rant over, sorry.

Edited to add: yeah, I know that isn't what the thread is about, but I couldn't let it go by without a response--of course I understand darkvibe's context as well.

Yeah, I agree it's stupid that it's illegal but my comments were based on the fact that it is illegal and probably will stay that way for a while. It pisses me off too

The ban is a joke. You can completely ignore it if you follow one simple rule.

    Buy pre ban.
