Finding manufacture date for a Squires Bingham 22lr

Hey there NY Firearms folks,

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I have a friend at work who has a Squires Bingham Model 20 22LR semi-auto that he bought at K-Mart about 26 yrs ago, around 1985-1986.

He loves this gun and wants to give it to his son but he is not sure about the 14 rnd cap slide-in mag that came with the gun back then when the NY state ban on 10+ mags was not in effect.

He wants to find out by the serial number the manufcature date just so he has peace of mind knowing his son can prove the gun and it's mag were made pre-ban. And yes, a 22LR 14 cap slide-in mag is indeed not legal in NY state. It's just the 22LR tubular mag guns that escape the high cap rule.

He asked me about it, but I am not sure how to answer him. I know the Squires Bingham Model 20 22LR rifles were manufactured in the Philippines and brought in by K-Mart Corp., but I don't know what manufacturer to question about matching the serial number with manufacture date.

Does anyone know who manufactured these guns in 1985? Do you think K-Mart may know? Thanks Eagle

Hey, I'm trying to find some info on it but I did find this, it was a safety recall for these range of serial numbers:

A168233 to A171357
A215026 to A216550
A216581 to A216980

make sure it is safe, I'll post more if I find out more

Q: May i ask the production date/year on my M20? Its sn is 23-9717723

A: last quarter of 1978 Sir

If his isn't much higher then that serial number or is lower then that serial number that would be proof it was made either 1979-1980 or if its before that serial number before 1979.

Thanks for your reply. I have found after many emails and googling (which actually took a lot more than 45 seconds) and finally communicating with a rep for the manufacturer (ARMSCOR of the Philippines), that my serial number of 23-949xxx was manufactured first quarter 1978 and imported by K-Mart Corp. of Troy, Michigan. ARMSCOR shipped these model 20 rifles with 15 round mags standard, and only after 1994 started to ship to restricted states with 10 round mags. If anyone who owns one of these model 20 rifles chambered in 22LR is questioned about the 15 round mag, write to Armscor of the Philippines. If anyone needs that proper address, email me, I can also give you the contact person. Eagle
