Don't trust anybody

Went out shooting today at my friends property. He has a huge backstop ,big pod where we do a lot of fishing ,all on about 80 actress.
Anyway , wife and kids came too. We did some fishing and later me and my son went shooting. I pulled out new 10/22 ,so my 12 year old can have some fun. Later I let him shoot my S&W model 66 loaded with .38.
My wife joined use later and we shot everything I've brought. I did most of the loading. So,my dear half just finished shooting my ne Glock 35 and hands it to me with slide locked back and I hand her .357 to try .
I was done with Glock ,so I've dropped the slide , pointed gun in safe direction ( ground) and squeezed the trigger ( to put it away) and gun went booooom. Scared the crap out of me. Thanks to good habits ( like always keep the gun in safe direction ) nothing happened. Held at my wife ,that our 12 year old knows better, and gave her another schooling on gun safety. Then I kicked myself in the ass that I accepted gn with opened slide ,but never checked if magazine is in or if chamber is empty. Somehow when she was shooting ,slide locked back with 1 round still in the magazine and when I dropped it ,that round got chambered and eventually went off after I hit the trigger.

moral of the story? You can't trust anybody , not even your own ass. Sometimes you think you farted , just to find out that you **** yourself. Lol.

When I have someone had me a gun that they say is "unloaded" I give that statement as much faith as the Kool Aid guy telling me "I'm not going to crash through your wall and go OH YEAH!".

I assume you were in PA since idiotic NY gun laws don't allow anybody with out a permit over the age of 21 to handle a hand gun. And you broke Rule number 1. shame on you.

Use Talking Point Procedures (TPP's)

drop the magazine
lock the slide to the rear
visually and physically check to be sure the gun is empty
look away
check it agin

Make it standard operating procedure

That's what I do ,every time I pick the gun, take it out of safe, put it back to safe,hand it to somebody.....
i guess since slide was lock back,I had a brain fart and assumed it was empty.
Like a famous movie quote says " assumption is a mother of all f...ups".

In another thread, this is the pet peeved I mentioned. Always drop the magazine first then clear chamber. Glad you are ok. I have now trained myself whether a jam, putting the firearm down or handing it to some else, I drop the mag and clear the chamber. Let the person receiving the firearm load it themselves.

Funny you guys say that. When I was in highschool my buddy wanted to show 2 of us his dads pistol. I do not remember what it was but I do remember it being a 9mm. Needless to say he ended up with 1 hole threw his bed, everything that was under his bed, carpet and into the floor to exit somewhere we never knew all while we were trying to stay behind him. Best part is his mother was on the phone in the living run which is directly under his bedroom and she never heard the shot. We all got lucky that day!

it happens. good habits must be practiced at all times because...it happens. i had a similar incident a while back,made me tighten up my procedures
even though i was already very careful. you can't take it back once it goes boom. glad no one was injured.

His wife may have a permit, of course.

That said, I, too, assume he was in PA since idiotic NY gun laws require that he be at a "duly incorporated" range with an NRA-certified instructor* in order to let his under-21 (...but 14 or older) son handle/fire his pistol.

OP, be careful about what you post. Thankfully your friend lives in PA.

The relevant text is found in the exemptions section of Article 265 (265.20, subsection a-7e):

7-e. Possession and use of a pistol or revolver, at an indoor or
outdoor pistol range located in or on premises owned or occupied by a
duly incorporated organization organized for conservation purposes or to
foster proficiency in small arms or at a target pistol shooting
competition under the auspices of or approved by an association or
organization described in paragraph 7-a of this subdivision for the
purpose of loading and firing the same by a person at least fourteen
years of age but under the age of twenty-one who has not been previously
convicted of a felony or serious offense, and who does not appear to be,
or pose a threat to be, a danger to himself or to others; provided
however, that such possession shall be of a pistol or revolver duly
licensed to and shall be used under the immediate supervision, guidance
and instruction of, a person specified in paragraph seven of this
subdivision.

Looks like I overreached on the NRA-approved instructor part. Has to be between 14 and 20 (inclusive) and has to be at an incorporated gun range.

That whole section of law kills me. So many people have violated it and never knew it. My grandpa and I used to shoot balloons with his .22 six-shooter when we went to camp. It was a fun and valuable learning experience for me that I will never forget. And now that I'm older, I find out that I was committing a crime.

I really wish we could get those exemptions expanded to be (much) more reasonable, but any time I write my (pro-2A) state senator, the response I get is along the lines of "well, I wish I could, but I would expend political capital on something that will never go anywhere, so I can't."

I just realized that I've derailed this thread. Sorry, OP, I'll stop.

I'm glad nothing happened.......But the bottom line is,you had a loaded gun handed to you and failed to check if it was clearly unloaded or not yourself.....Pointing downrange was smart,and a good thing you did,next time check a weapon to see if it is unloaded or not yourself,and assume that is is until you verify otherwise.
