I was just going to post this story..........

There is an online petition to pressure Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance to drop the charges.
    http://www.thepetitionsite.com/3/the...t-ryan-jerome/

And there is a facebook page dedicated to gathering support to drop the charges.

I'd be interested in hearing the details of the case, other than what the article states. I wonder if it is honestly a mistake like the attorney said. If so, why approach Empire State Building security officers? Seems like a stange choice. But I wasn't there, so I dunno. Maybe he was going to visit there and asked to check his gun before entering as a tourist?? I'll be interestd to see this play out.

According to this article, he tried to check his weapon with security.

Not to try to stir the pot or anything - I'm all for giving people a break if its an honest mistake and all , but isn't part of owning and traveling with a handgun or any other weapon knowing and abiding by the laws into the states/areas which we travel ?

I always wondered that..... I think there would be a good turn out and if the numbers were large enough, a good result. They do this with the marijuana parades, everyone smokes, but there are so many people doing it very rarely are there arrests.

It blows my mind how many out of state people get hemmed up like this. The laws are so different state to state, and quite often so convoluted that there would be no way you could actually figure it out if you were traveling around with a gun. Such a shame.

So what about interstate travel? I thought it was legal with a firearm as long as it is locked up and you are traveling through and not stopping overnight? How does NYC's laws trump federal law?

Although I think the laws in NYC and NY state in general are moronic... You have to know the gun laws of the place you are traveling simple as that and its the guys own fault for assuming he could bring his gun

I always wonder the same thing. Yes NY gun laws suck but that doesn't change the fact this guy obviously did no research on NY gun laws. I don't know of a single gun owner that doesn't know NY is the antichrist as far as gun laws go. It is your responsibility to know the laws of the states you are carrying in.

It is but he was not travelling through. He was here visiting and tried to check his firearm at the Empire State Building which promted security to call the cops.

I think one thing we don't see as we are so familiar with the f'd up gun laws because we live in NY, it this crap is foreign. It's like growing up in the US where we have the right to free speach, then going to Canada where if you say something offensive against a protected class, you can get arrested. The problem is NY gun laws fly in the face of freedom, the bill of rights, and the 2nd Amendment. They are un-American. Is it a wonder other people are confused? I think not.

I think the more imortant point is, why is the State of NY turning people into felons simply because they crossed an imaginary line on the ground. What changed in these individuals from the day before to make them "criminals"

These people are obviously hard working, tax paying individuals with disposable income that came to "The Greatest city in the world" to see for themselves what happened at the WTC and what does NYS do, We turn them into felons. If they make an honest mistake, take there gun away and mail it back to them (at there expense)

It's good thing I don't win the lottery, I would start an Advertising campaign to NOT VISIT Bloombergs city. I would go on the war path to stop tourism to NYC. The only way Bloomberg will take notice is if you hit him in the pocket book, period.

    Spot on!

I am an American. I have the rights guaranteed to me by the constitution. I go on vacation to a different part of America (but still America). I am now a felon. Perhaps he should have dome some research on wether the other amendments do not apply there as well!? Come on...

First, his rank at discharge has nothing to do with this. As I understand it the service has changed and time in rank has vary little do do with promotions. Reading the artical i think he drove in wanted to comply with ny. law and approched the nearest law agency. As a previous post said, take his gun send it back to his home and charge him for the cost. What the hell happen to common sinse? Oh,I forgot, this is nys. My daughter just returned from a 4 day trip to San Antonio. Texas. Brought me a coffee mug. I sure wish I knew how to post pics. Mug has a pic. of a large cal. revolver over a outline of the state and reads, We dont call 911. She said I dont believe it dad, every body has a gun ,AND THEY DONT HIDE THEM!! Folks couldnt be any better!! Must be a small part of heaven.

I was going to post the same comment yesterday. Maybe a thousand or so citizens from out-of-State should show up to NYC "packing" their legally-owned, licensed handguns. Might get the message across more effectively, demonstrating the frivolity of NYC (and NYS) handgun laws. I'm not an advocate for breaking laws by any means, but when laws are unjust and result in frivolous prosecution, well, in that case I say break the **** out of it.

I would suspect there would be many arrest of the out of starters. It may even escalate into something very bad if a visitor made what was considered a dangerous move. That type of action is just what the anti gun movement is looking for. The way NYC is prepared for terriost actions, I would bet most of if everyone would be arrested for a felony, a thousand people or not. I dont believe the message would change at all, the only message would be dont bring a gun to NYC.

    well, you are wrong.
However, i'm just wondering since his lawyer is flying the "OMG, he's a vet, you can't do this to him...."
Who knows, he could have been discharged for medical reasons or another...it was a simple question that you are blowing out of proportion...but alas, it made me smile, so i thank you.

I don't see how him being a vet even plays into this. He broke the law. The DA will probably decline to prosecute in the end. Isn't that what they did to the Tea Party head?

The gun laws need to be changed in NY. Unfortunately, I don't think it will happen anytime soon. There are too many people (I'm pointing at you NYC) that still see guns as evil, and there is no reason to have them. Where I grew up, getting a bb gun and a .22 for a birthday marked milestones in growing up. Nobody in my family had pistols, but they were just another firearm, they weren't anything to be scared of.

they should apply this line of thinking to every citizen, not just us vets.
On one hand, everyone needs to know the laws of where they carry.
On the other, the laws are assinine, but they are still laws.
When i travel to NJ, i don't push the issue and carry...i don't even take my pistol since i don't have a permit there. I know some that would just say, "I'm traveling from NY, through NJ (leaving locked in car -another bad idea) and on my way to XX state where i have a permit..."
All being legal...but that is pushing it in NJ IMHO.
