    Default Yet another AR-15...

I figured I might as well throw up a thread along with the other 5-6 active ones going

I pretty much have everything figured out, except for the hand guard and gas block. It's just going to be a simple 20". Also, pretty much everything is on order, I actually just got off the phone with AllStar, except for the lower kit and the upper so I'm just waiting for things to show up. I grabbed the lower build "kit" from Palmetto State Armory, which was the LPK, the MOE pieces and buffer tube. It was between a Mega or Spikes lower, but Spikes had the listing of FFLs on file right on their site so I went with that.

    Spikes Lower Reciever
    Magpul OD MOE Mil-spec Stock
    Magpul OD MOE Grip
    Magpul OD MOE Trigger guard
    CMMG LPK
BCM Upper Receiver (w/ M4 feedramps)
YHM 20" Fluted 1:7 threaded barrel
    YHM Specter gas block
    YHM Phantom Brake
    LMT F/A BCG
BCM Mod3 (? the bigger of the 2) charging handle
YHM Rifle length customizable FF forearm

I do know that for the handguard, I don't need a high-price tacticool one. I'm looking at just a simple AL free-float and running a rail on top, and maybe the bottom for a bi-pod.

Check out the Magpul MOE handgaurd, you can add rails to it!

I had been looking at that one, but saw it only came in carbine length. I was looking for a rifle/standard length.

If you look at the 2010 Magpul part binder (ad sheets), they will be offering the MOE handgaurd in carbine, mid, and rifle lengths, with various Magpul colors!! Not sure of an ETA on the product. Check the Magpul website or shoot them an email.

Didn't even realize that. I was just going by what's on the 'shop' portion of the site. I just looked at the catalog and saw it in there. I'll shoot them an email about it...

Actually, I was just checking Midway and it looks like they have them on the site. I'll be looking for a different one if this is true:
    Date Expected In-Stock: 7/15/2010
Has anybody had any experience with the YHM "Customizable" FF forearm? YHM has them on sale right now because of overstock...

Did you already buy the lower receiver? We have lots of spikes in stock also I think we actually have everything on your list in stock, except for the barrel which I called you about earlier

Yeah, I just ended up ordering a lower off their site last week, since they had the list of all their FFLs on file on the site. The FFL I was going to deal with was on there so I just went through with it...

The more I thought about it today, the more I think I may go with the 1:9 instead of waiting the ~8-10 weeks for the 1:7. If I do I'll let you know soon. I may grab that FF handguard I mentioned above too...

Well I ended up going with the 1:9 barrel instead of waiting a few months for the 1:7 to go back in stock. Also decided on the customizable FF handguard from YHM I mentioned above and a specter gas block. I think I now have everything on order or in my hands...

Just picked up the lower from McLain's this afternoon, but my wife went to the walk-in this afternoon and the doctor thought she might have appendicitis so we're sitting in the ER. I had been hoping to get the lower together tonight, but that's obviously not happening now

Make sure you pick up a YHM forearm wrench, only way you can install their barrel nut and jam nut!

I found mine at Midway USA

I had looked at it and was just going to make my own, but I just don't have the time lately. I'll order one when I grab an armorer's wrench...

Well it was all going together nice until a nice chain of events have left me one piece short now

I decided to put the lower together during lunch, since I was working from home, and everything was good until I got to the buffer retainer/detent/thingie. I now realize my buffer tube isn't a totally flush cut at the end of the threads and when I screwed over the retainer I figured I was in the clear; which wasn't the case. I turned it 1/4 turn more and the retainer and spring went flying past my head just as my wife was opening the door to let one of our dogs out. Needless to say the retainer is somewhere outside now...

Bro, you could have bought the BCM receiver with a 20" BCM barrel already put on and the Mil-spec BCG with it on the same order. They have them in stock.

Yeah, I was out there trying to find it with one, but no luck. One of the dogs might have grabbed it, so I'm just considering it lost now...

Yeah, but I wanted to put it together from scratch.

Thanks a lot for the offer, but I actually ordered one from Midway a little bit ago when I grabbed a couple other little things...

Well, I randomly found the retainer when we were leaving for dinner tonight. It must have hit the screen door as it was "leaving" the house, because I found it on the back porch. Just finished putting it together, so now I'm just waiting for the pieces I have on order with Allstar...

So everything else came in yesterday, and after running up to the Syracuse show today to grab a gas tube retainer pin it's all together for the most part. The one thing I did find out is that the forearm end cap I got (15/16") ended up being too small for the barrel. Going the give Allstar a call tomorrow to see if I could "exchange" it for the bigger (1-1/16"?) one...

Hoping to take it out to the range tomorrow or Tuesday...

I finally got it oiled up tonight so I'm taking it to the range tomorrow after dinner. Called Mike@Allstar Monday and am swapping end caps and I dropped the small one in the mail today. I do need to order some buis', so I may just grab a set of the Magpul MBUS's.

Took it to the range last night, for the first time. Loaded it up with just 2 rounds in the mag (new 10rd CMag) first, and went to go fire the first shot and just heard a click. Dropped the mag, cleared the round, and tried the other 10rd mag; same thing. Started pulling it apart, didn't see anything out of the ordinary, when the other guy who was there came by and asked if I was having a problem. Told him the problem and he started to take a look too, and mentioned the bolt was a bit sticky. Pulled the BCG apart, and the bolt was pretty much dry. I placed a couple drops down the tube when I had oiled it up, but I guess I didn't lube it up enough, lol. Sprayed some lube on it, put it together, and fired 30 rounds through it without a hitch. Going to take it out again tomorrow to get it all sighted in at around 100yds. I had forgotten my scope, to see where I was hitting, so I just shot at 25 and 50 yards...

I should have about 10 sets of the magpul BUIS on order. I'll keep you updated if you don't have them yet. I have to call YHM on monday and get that end cap ordered still!

Yeah if you could let me know when you get them in. I'm just still not decided if I want the polymer sites though. If I get 5 minutes to think about something, I change my mind...

I'm actually taking the end cap to the post office this morning. My wife told me last night she wasn't able to get there after work the other day, and still had it in her work bag.

The Magpul sites are nice. They are pretty inexpensive. But they are thicker. When you go to the Troy or MI sites they fold down thinner and are more likely able to fold under a scope. Not sure what the MI sites go for, but the Troy sites are like 2-3 times more expensive than the Magpul sites. If you're gonna just run a red dot without a magnifier then either will work. I'm not sure if the MBUS site will fit under the Aimpoint 3x magnifier. Mike, do you know if they'll fit?

I had also been looking at the YHM sites, looks like they're ~2X the cost of the magpuls. After shooting with that red dot the other day, I'm not sure how long I'll use it for if I get a decent iron site, since it's a lot bulkier than I thought it would be. At the very least I'll probably need to move it forward a bit, partly onto the forearm, whenever get the buis...
