Curios and relics may still be legally purchased and brought into the State but they must be registered within 30 days of their transfer into New York. The restrictions on transfers, applicable to Assault Weapons, do not apply to relics or curios.
My take on it was: All it means is that you can still buy and bring in C&R rifles and register that meet their new AW definition. Stuff like MAS 49-56's, FN 49 and whatnot.
Assault weapons 50 years old or older must be registered but are still transferable in NY.
The SAFE act does not reference the C&R status of a firearms. They say "50 years"
That should mean that a AR manufactured in 1980 will be able to be transferred to your descendents in 2030.
I'm having a hard time thinking of any Pre WWII guns that would need to be registered. Maybe Mauser Broom handles and Luger Snail Drums?. A Mondragon? Mexican Mondragon semiauto
M1 carbine with a bayonet lug is an example - c&r is anything over fifty so made prior to jan 1964. Early commercial cabines also - there are probably others but these come to mind
