    Default BUIS Quick Question

I just got a ar and ordered a no name buis rear site for it. I feels well made but I notice when I flip up the site there seems to be slight play in the site that it plays forward ever so slightly. I wonder if this is normal with all buis or is it just mine and I need to get another before going out to zero it.
If that is not normal this timre around I will just go and get a brand one like magpul or something and not cut corners. Again the play is very slight but I noticed it and it started bothering me so I had to post.

    Mine don't move.

If it's front back play I wouldn't worry. Side to side would be another story.

I've heard that 2 days in a row about 2 different things firearms related. First was some cheap wolf 9mm ammo giving me failures in my Ruger. I shot wolf out of it before but this batch was horrible. 2nd was from you. Maybe I should listen....
As far as the site goes got good reviews and the craftsmanship doesnt seem shody just that play I mentioned.

How much play do you get? I just pulled mine out of the safe. I do have a little. Maybe 1/16" or less when it's locked up. Never noticed it till I just checked.

IDK how much you paid, but there are a few companies that make solid BUIS out there that are fairly inexpensive.

I have Magpuls and they ar nice and relatively cheap. I have ARMS on another ar and are very pricey but worth every penny

I just ordered the Magpul Gen 2 BUIS set, so I'll let you know how they are hopefully by the weekend as long as my parts get here.

In the firearms world this is absolutely true 95% of the time. Every now and then you find something that is way less than other items in the category yet are as good or out preform the competitors. Wilson Air guage stainless barrels happen to be one those few items there are other items too.

The Matech BUIS I use are pretty solid, or at least you have to use manual force get them to move when deployed and then things snap right back into place anyway. Certainly no flop, rattle, buzz or overextending when flipped up and have a really good repeatable zero, even if outright removed and reinstalled a few times during heavier maintenance.
Just don't reef the piss out of the mounting screw.

Dunno about any front sights as up til now I rely strictly on standard gas block sight towers, cause they don't move, they don't break, and they never need to be deployed. At worst you may bend an ear or ding the sight pin, but if you can manage that with traditional irons, a set of folders aren't going to be any sort of improvement.

I am however intrigued by some of the A.R.M.S. offerings and am ever so slightly considering a set of them for a future build.
Do note that some versions of the rear do have a rep for causing one of the peeps to kinda flip/move a bit when the sight is snapped open, but I'm not going to call it a deal killer due to the type rifle they are going on as they will be almost never put up after zero'ing whereas the Matech mentioned above spends about 50/50 in either up or down (IOW they get as much use as the optic) depending on mood.

I'm not sure what ARMS sights you guys are looking at, but I have two #40s and would not buy another one.

This is a photo that was taken at a local match (I was at this match, but not in this squad):

I'm certain the gun was not zeroed with the shooter's ball cap yanking the sight back slightly. This photo was shot on a close-range stage, but this could have happened on a longer range stage as well. Yes, you can blame it on the shooter's ball cap, but I don't like a sight that even allows this as a possibility. Today it might be a ballcap, tomorrow it could be debris, or a weak spring.

Fail-proofing your kit is about determining any potential points of failure and mitigating or eliminating them. I think sights that rely on spring tension to maintain a deployed position are an explicit liability.

This is why, IMO Troy > ARMS.

Troy's sights have a soft detent in the "down" position, and a hard detent in the "up" position. They will not flop out while they're stowed, but they do not require you to fiddle with a button to put them up (like some sights that lock both ways). But once they are up, you can hit twigs, foliage or a cinderblock and they will not fold, wobble or bob, unless you unlock them via button push. Best of both worlds--speed in deployment, and security once deployed.

I tend to stick to troy and magpul BUIS as well. Try diopter being one of the best I've used yet.

+1 for Troy - Expensive enough to make you wonder if you are crazy for spending $200+ on BUIS, but they are top notch quality

I would check out the MATECH BUIS - Botach tactical has them for dirt cheap, like $40 bucks or so. This is the rear sight that the boys at Picatinny Arsenal in NJ developed for the Army, even has their logo on it. It is a 600m sight.

Oooh, at that price I may have to pick up a couple more sets just onnaconna.
They are usually much closer to the $100 range from what I've seen.

Do note that there is a difference in zeroing that sight dependant on if its mounted on a carbine or a rifle.
Carbine gets the 300m mark, rifle gets the little line under the 300m mark which corrects for the difference in sight tower height and trajectory between the two lengths.

MATECH BUIS all the way. That's all I have on my AR's. Simple but effective.

We just got a set of diamond head premium sights into the shop. Diamondhead holds the patent for the true diopter-style rear sight. Can't wait to try a set out as we're looking to order them in and laser them with our logo for our complete rifles.

As far as sights go, when we think of quality we're usually looking to Arms, Troy, Midwest, Samson, and Magpul. These diamondhead sights are highly rated in the LEO world so we're very excited to see how they work out for us. We won't put our name on anything that hasn't been fully tested by us.

    Do you mean Diamondheads?
I have a set and they are fricken awesome.
    Also have a Troy di-optic.

I know I'm a little late to the party, here, but I'd put in another vote for a set of Troys. I have an HK front and regular rear folding sight, and they're both extremely solid. No perceivable play in either at all. They lock up tight with two steel pins in a cam, so once they're up they're going to stay that way until you're good and ready to put them back down. Buy once, cry once.
