Default 2 time Appleseed attendee here....

hey all. just wanted to chime in here re the Appleseed Project (AS). I have attended two of these shoots and have nothing to say but great things about these folks and the program they offer.

this is a really low-pressure, history-intensive basic rifleman course that is good for all ages, and for guys and girls alike. what is shown is how important the basics are; sling usage, breathing, finding the natural point of aim, etc. my groups & scores improved greatly after the first day of instruction.

mixed in is a vastly important exposure to historical events of 1775, and how this nation was forged; upon patriotism and rifleman skills. very impressive indeed.

I am an active participant in the downstate AS activities (limited to Calverton, LI, NY at this time), but we have started something from nothing down here. there was nothing, then we filled two (three?) events down here in no time. it became apparent this was an undersevered firearms community down here.

anyhow, there's nothing but positive things I can say about AS. I love it. the people. the program. the instruction. all, top notch. so, sign up for one, and learn something about your country's heritage, and most likely you'll add some sweet shooting skills while you are at it.!!!!

I'll 2nd the above. I'll be doing my 2nd Appleseed event this summer in Elbridge. Wife and I had a great time together doing our first AS last year in Elbridge. It was her first time shooting and she really enjoyed it. Shooters ranged from teens to 60's, well seasoned expert shooters to beginners. And the instruction was top notch.

it's a high-quality event; both interms of the instruction and the instructors. their dedication is inspiring (they are all volunteers).

Default Ammo?

How much ammo should be brought to one of these events?

if you are going for both days of a weekend shoot, I'd say 400-500 rounds to be certain. the number of rounds fired depends upon the individual instructors and their pace/cadence. you might get away with only 300, but you could run short on the second day with onlythat amount.

hope that's helpful.

Default Where is the Long Range Shooting?

So I went to the Appleseed web site and looked at all of the upcoming shoots in NY and the bordering states and was disappointed that I couldn't find anywhere that had long range shooting. The furthest I found was 200 yards but many were only 25m. And many of the shoots were .22 rim fire only. I thought Appleseed's gig was 500 meter shoots. Did I miss something? Is there anywhere in the north east where 500+ meter shoots are held?
Thanks.

I can't wait to attend this event! It will be my first time too.
I heard that the Calverton shoot is full. That's a great thing!

no, not yet. I won't have the money until tomorrow (pay day). things are tight. my wife was on "lag pay" at her job from July-Dec 2009. it buried us. we are still digging out.

This is probably a dumb question.
Does one need to book a hotel for a multi-day event or is there camping?

Hey Dutchess County. I grew up there. I'm in Ulster now. It seems like each shoot is a little different. If you click on the information link it will give you the specifics for that event. I'm going to my first one this May. There is camping space available for that one but no facilities. We're opting for the motel. Hope this helps.

John

check the AS website for the info sheet. there's camping, but it's off site. depending upon how far you are traveling, I guess, you'd need a place the night before, and for Sat night. If I was going, I'd offer my place for some crashers. does not look like I am going to make this local one, maybe one upstate.

it's not exactly a great area to get a hotel. look for hotels WEST of the location. say, between exits 57-64 of the Long Island Expresssway. that way, you are close enough to get to the event, and can get some quality sleeping arrangements.

PM me if you want more details. have fun!

(and to the LIF spy, sod off, son)

if I do an AS shoot that weekend, it will be upstate. I missed the boat for the local show it looks like.
