So the title says it all, I'm trying to decided between a 1-4x or 2-7x for my current build, a 10/22 Ruger. I want something that I can plink with, take to the range, and attempt maybe some longer than I should be shooting . Also I plan to do an Appleseed in the near future. Lastly in the next few months I "hope" to either get an AR or AK and would like something that could possibly work on that platform as well.
Here is what I was thinking about so far, and pros, cons, and/or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks and feel free to suggest others, budget definitely under $175
On .22 I like 4x fixed. Nikon makes 4x32 Rimfire that you can find for less than $100. It will hold zero on AR or AK just fine, too, although you might want to leave it on .22 and put another, better glass on AR.
For Appleseed iron sights would be better, unless your vision is less than 20/20 and you need the optics to see targets clearly.
1-4x are not at their best at 4x, front element is too small for that. They are excellent choice for home defense AR, set at 1x.
Unfortunatley my vision is far worse than 20/20, I have an eye condition that even prevents me from wearing contacts. I've tried to shoot iron and it is painfully frustrating.
So you'd recommend leaning towards a 2-7x or fixed 4x?
I would go with 4x. On a .22 you probably don't need more than that, and larger scopes don't look natural. The $40 you save can go towards good rings or ammo.
I use a straight 6X, great for targets and hunting as long as your not shooting at 50 feet. 1-4 may be on the low end, the Burris would be my choice if I had to pick between the two but still prefer a staight power. The choice has to be yours not someone elses and look through the glass outside, not in the store under flouresent lighting, not a good comparision of optic quality environment.
I just shot an Appleseed afew weeks ago had a Tasco 2.5/10 scope on my 10/22 ( also bad eyesight) Only used it on 3 power helps to steady the target better on low power for the off-hand shooting. Shoot the rifleman score three times (227/225/225) now I'm an IIT1 after working my frist Appleseed 2 weeks ago! Good shooting you will definitely get alot out of the program.
I'm with evileyes on the 2-7. I have a 3-9 on my 10/22 and a 1-4 on my AR. I wouldn't want the 1-4 on my 10/22 but that is just my opinion and how I shoot.
2-7. x2 (in the lower setting) allows pretty fast two eyes open adquisition if that's what you want too.
Here is a nice review. The E1 also comes with a tad taller turrets and windage comp. reticle. A very good value.
Here.... Sniper Central - Burris 3-9x40mm Fullfield II BallisticPlex
I just built my first AR...I chose a less know scope. Bresser 1-4x24 illuminated mildot. only place i found it was midway usa $200.00 shipped. Im shooting good groups at 100yds with crap ammo, glass is nice and clear. With it on 1x you can use it close range. nictaylor00 on youtube mounted it on his AR for 3gun, hes hitting targets out to 500yds no problem.
