So, I've recently purchased an Armalite AR-30 in .300 Win Mag and have spent two days so far researching optics. I'd like to keep it around $1000ish, and these are what I'm looking at so far.
I have access to a 1000 yard range, so you can bet I'll be doing plenty of that. What I'm interested in is bang-for-the-buck. For example, is the Mark 4 worth the cost over a VX-3? Is there another optic I should be looking at? (other than a $1600 Nightforce).
I agree with evileyes. That vortex is the ticket. below $1000. tracks perfectly. zero stop. 4-16 is good for most but if you are going to shoot small game then you might want 6-24.
They are well-constructed.
Superb Japanese glass so no problems with the glass that I can see, no chromatic aberration or aspherity can be detected.
Zero stop works perfectly
It tracks to the T.
The illumination is not that useful during daylight (Personally I do not care).
The reticle options are very well thought out.
It works just like scopes 2-3 times that price tag.
I have several Bushnell Elite 4200's and Nikon Monarch's that I prefer over any $1,000 scope I have ever used. I hate to see you spend less than half the money you are looking to spend but the 4200 would get my vote.
The newer version of the Bushnell Elite series is the 6500. It is a bit more money than the 4200 but I hear good things about them. I have no experience with them.
i love my nikons. i use buckmaster's for rifles i plan to and use for hunting, and i use monarchs for the bench and tactical set ups. some of the monarchs come with sunshades now also.
I own this Vortex........... Vortex 2.5-10x44 Viper PST 30mm Rifle Scope
You won't be disappointed.
I know a couple guys that run the Vortex PST 1-4.
I have yet to hear any bad reviews on the PST line-up.
Im not an expert, but the VX-3 is more of a target type scope, where the mark 4 is a sniper type , Little differences here and there.
I believe a mildot reticle on the VX3 is going to be extra $$ if thats what your looking for.
In that price range , I think it just comes down to nesessity and preferance.
If I had the funds, I take the mark 4 and not look back . Its been used by the military and law enforcement and Im not so a Nightforce is $1000 better in performance.
I have a armalite ar10 with a mark4 6.5-20x50mm I love it but got a killer deal on it... if your ever in the buffalo area your welcome to take a shot with it. I havent sited for 1000yrds but have done a few 500's
Appreciate all the responses. I'm going to investigate the Viper PSTs a bit more and then make a decision.
I have to say, though, I was a gun shop here in Virginia yesterday and took a look at a Weaver Tactical. Man, what a quality scope for not a ton of money (about $900, I believe).

Weaver tactical are also coming out very nice. I do not have one of those just yet but it is in the list. All good stuff there. You will love the PST too.
Good luck.
I'd go with a Vortex Viper PST FFP. Every Vortex optic I've ever fondled, shot with, etc... has legitimately made me wonder how in the hell they price them for so cheap and stay in business.
I have found Nikon to be nice glass for the money. I bought a mid priced Millet 4-16 last year but haven't mounted it yet. The Vortex is a good scope I hear.
Cossey,
the PST 4-16x50 has 75MOA of adjustment, zero stop, mil-mil option so for that price range is a good as it gets.
I think they also can customize your turrets for you if you want.
E,
I like a bit of zoom in my optics so I will prolly stick w/ the 6-24x. Especially since Allstar Tactical has had one on order for a while that may have my name on it! lol
I really do not think there is a better quality/featured scope for under $1k than the Viper PST line. First focal plane, zero-stop, mil-mil, and excellent glass. Side focus is definitely a plus as well.
The 6-24 is kind of nice. you can shoot those long range squirrels right between the eyes! lol!
Yes PSTs are hard to beat. Weaver tactical, Nikon and Bushnell also have great options under 1G.
Ended up going with the Viper PST 6-24x FFP model. Man, what a remarkable scope.
Btw, I didn't see you post until just now.
