DC vs Heller decision declares DC handgun ban unconstitutional

June 26th, 2008 by nyfirearms

Great News for firearms owners and enthusiasts everywhere. The on-going supreme court case of DC vs Heller has come to a close and the DC handgun ban has been declared unconstitutional. This is great news for handgun owners everywhere. Hopefully we’ll see the effects of this up in NY with handgun permits, and maybe the removal of the Assault Weapons Ban (yeah right, I can dream).

When Zombies Attack…

June 24th, 2008 by mikecentola

This past Sunday, I was invited out to Canandaigua Sportsmen’s Club to do some tactical shooting with Ron Lauinger of LMI, Inc. When I arrived there, Ron was already stapling various zombie targets to stands, and he said we would be hunting zombies today! I was already excited.

After chit-chatting with Ron for a while, I already had a good feeling that he knew what he was talking about and I was in for a great learning experience. Once more people started to arrive, and after the range was set up properly, the training began.

I use the term “training” fairly loosely here not because I didn’t think it was an adequate training, but because it was really a bunch of firearms enthusiasts who wanted some extra tactical training. Ron is happy to offer this to fellow enthusiasts on Sundays.

So, I loaded up my Mossberg 500 Tactical with some target loads and head down to the field, where the targets were set up, to meet Ron. At first we talk about some tactical ways to reload, better ways to hold the shotgun, and what to do once the zombies have been shot in the face. We then procede to run through some drills with various scenarios.

What a blast, though. I cannot emphasize enough that within the two hours I spent with Ron and my shotgun, I had learned a great deal both about good ways to handle my firearm, as well as how to manuver tactically with the shotgun.

For anyone in the Rochester, NY or surrounding areas, I would definitely try to contact Ron (who is a current vendor on NY Firearms) and see about coming to his Sunday adventures.

I can’t wait for more tactical firearm training. It is probably one of the best things to learn, especially if you own a firearm for home defense. I will continue to review the various training sessions I go to.

Be safe everyone.

NYC Gun Laws to change?

June 20th, 2008 by nyfirearms

Everyone, I hope, has heard about the Supreme Court case of The District of Columbia v. Heller, where a security guard has stepped up to say that the D.C. gun ban is an unconstitutional infringement on the Second Amendment, his right to bear arms.

The New York Sun has published that if gun enthusiasts are victorious in the supreme court case, laws in New York City may change. Currently in New York City to own a handgun, it would cost almost $1000 in fees and is a very lengthy process.

Unfortunately, Mayor Bloomberg has come about as a definite foe of the gun community, where he has pressed lawsuits against manufactuers and retail establishments across the east coast. Something that the people of NYC should consider when voting next ;)

While sometimes New York City seems like a completely different state when compared to the remainder of New York, the laws and actions regarding firearms in NYC can have a great impact on the rest of the state.

Personally, I think we, as gun enthusiasts, need to support the Second Amendment all across New York State, with hopes that we can fight these ridiculous anti-gun laws.

Revised NYS assault weapons ban passed to senate

June 17th, 2008 by darkvibe

A revision to the NYS assault weapons ban has passed the assembly and is currently in the senate.  This bill has made it this far in the past and has died.  Hopefully it dies again this time.

Significant changes to the law include:

Redefines assault weapons as a semi-automatic rille that accepts a detachable magazine having one or more of the following; a pistol grip, a second hand grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand, a folding, telescoping or thumb-hole stock, a barrel shroud or a muzzle brake or compensator.

Adds any semi-automatic pistol that can accept a detachable magazine and had a compensator to the list of banned weapons.

See the summary and voting record from the assembly here: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A07331

Project AR-15 Begins

June 15th, 2008 by nyfirearms

We have begun our Project AR-15 with the purchase of a stripped lower receiver! This is the first in a series of posts where we will take building an NY compliant AR-15 that is still fun to shoot, looks great, and built well.

To get started, we have purchased a stripped lower receiver. The one we found was a Sun Devil Mfg lower. The unique part about the Sun Devil lower is that it has a tension screw that adjust the tension between the lower receiver and the upper receiver. This definitely looks to be a cool feature and should help, possibly, with the accuracy of the gun.

For this build I think we are going to go with a 20″ style A3 rifle for some longer range shooting. Stay tuned for updates to this project as we piece it together!

Paterson proposes strengthening New York firearms law

June 8th, 2008 by nyfirearms

I know this article is a few weeks old now, but I just ran across it and gave it a good read. Read it and let us know what you think!

Personally, I am for enhancing gun safety and the like, but not if its just another stepping stone in trying to eliminate our Second Amendment rights.

NYS Gun Laws

June 4th, 2008 by nyfirearms

Check out a new page we just finished, entitled NYS Gun Laws. It has a reproduction of the NYS Gun Laws that the NRA has compiled.

We feel it is always important to know what laws are in place so you do not inadvertently break the law and face serious penalties.
